You should always do your best
to get top-notch reference. Always contact the manufacturer for some
proper blueprint. If you can afford it, go buy the real thing. Or make
sure you know someone who has the
model.
I wanted to "cage" the model with nurbscurves. By "caging"
the model, I mean creating a reference wireframe
with curves. You can use these curves later on to snap the vertices
on your faces. By using this method
you gain several advantages. Firstly you get a good reference, secondly
you manage to limit your poly-
budget. It's easy to spread polys like some wild guy without a clue
when it comes to heavy scenes.
With this cage it's easy to see where you really need extra
polygons.
Always limit your polycount when possible. Also consider how far away
the model shall be viewed.
